Synthlit makes full-cast audiobooks of public-domain literature, on synthlit.com and in the Synthlit apps for Android and iPhone. This page explains what we collect, why we collect it, who else handles it, and how to have it deleted. It applies to the website and both apps.
We collect as little as we can. We don’t sell your information, we don’t run advertising, and we don’t use tracking or analytics services.
What we collect
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address | To sign you in: we email you a one-time code instead of using a password. We also use it to write to you about your account. |
| Your first name, if you give it | To greet you. It’s optional. |
| Where you are in each book | So you can stop on one device and carry on from the same place on another. |
| Listening time per book per day | For your own listening stats. We also add it up across everyone to sort the library by what’s popular. That total never identifies you. |
| Your collections, bookmarks and player settings | Because you made them, and so they follow you between devices. |
| Lines you flag, and any note you add | So we can re-record lines that sound wrong, and credit you with a free month when we do. |
| Your membership, referral code and free-month balance | To know which chapters you can play, and to pay out referral and flagging rewards. |
| Whether you agreed to marketing email, and when | Canadian anti-spam law (CASL) requires us to record consent. We only send marketing email if you opt in. |
| Your IP address | To limit sign-in attempts and protect the service from abuse. Short-lived rate-limit records and our server logs hold it. |
You can listen to the free sample without an account, and we store nothing about you while you do. The apps keep your sign-in, the library and any downloaded chapters on your phone. That storage stays on the device and is removed when you sign out or uninstall the app.
Payments
Payments go through Stripe. Your card details go straight to Stripe and never reach us. We keep only Stripe’s customer and subscription references, so we know what you’ve paid for.
Who else handles your information
A few companies handle data on our behalf, only to run Synthlit:
- Vultr hosts our servers and the account database.
- Cloudflare carries traffic to the site and stores and delivers the audio.
- Resend sends the sign-in code emails.
- Stripe processes payments.
We don’t share your information with anyone else, except when the law requires it. All traffic between your device and Synthlit is encrypted (HTTPS).
How long we keep it
We keep your account information for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, we delete it and everything listed above that’s linked to it, straight away. Stripe keeps its own payment records for as long as tax and financial law requires. Rate-limit records expire within hours. Server logs are kept only as long as we need them to run and secure the service.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time:
- In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account.
- On the web: synthlit.com/account/delete.
- By email: write to hello@synthlit.com from the address you sign in with.
Deleting your account cancels any subscription that is still running. Any free months or prepaid time left on the account are lost.
Your rights
You can ask to see the information we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted. Email hello@synthlit.com. We’ll answer within 30 days. If you’re not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or to the data-protection authority where you live.
Children
Synthlit isn’t aimed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us their email, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change affects what we collect or who sees it, we’ll email account holders before it takes effect.
